some are fantastic flights of fantasy and some are merely plausible. They
certainly provide good material for conversation. Books and articles dealing
with these aspects of the Maine Coon Cat have been well received as
people never seem to tire of the subject and are always eager to know
more about this wonderful breed.
The Maine Coon cat is the native American long haired cat and was
recognized as a specific breed in Maine where they were held in high regard
for their mousing talents. Through nature’s own breeding program, this
breed has developed into a sturdy cat ideally suited to the harsh winters
and varied seasons of the region. The Maine Coon is well known for its
loving nature, kindly disposition and great intelligence. Maine Coon cats are
especially good with children and dogs and have always been a popular and
sought after companion.
Maine Coon Cats are massive, tall, big-boned, with a broad chest and a long
rectangular body. It is one of the largest of the domestic breeds.
Everything about the Maine Coon Cat points to its adaptation to a harsh
climate. Their fur is 2-3 inches long and flowing, with a silky texture. The
hair is longer on the stomach, ruff and britches, forming a lion-like mane.
The coat is water-resistant and protects against cold and snow. The long
bushy tail helps to save warmth when the cat curls up to sleep. Maine Coon
kittens reaches "maturity" at around 18 months and reaches it full "type"
between 4 and 5 years. The females are smaller and slower to mature than
the males.
The ears are heavily furred and have a large range of movement. The long
square muzzle facilitates grasping prey and lapping water from streams. Big
tufted feet serve as snowshoes. Maine Coon Cats have excellent sight and
hearing. The large round eyes of purebred Maine Coon kittens are set at a
slightly oblique angle. The breed is also known for its special voices: Maine
Coon Cats rarely meow, but use a loud chirping trill for everything from
courting to invitation for play.
